Ted Lewin
When I was seven years old my brother Donn joined the marines. It was 1942. He was fifteen years old. He forged his birth certificate and badgered my father into vouching for him.
At boot camp on Paris Island the DIs knew he was too young and tried to make him quit by being especially hard on him. It made him all the more determined and tough as a pit bull.

Stephen Johnson: Jack of Spades
Through forceful, abstract brushstrokes, representing the effect of warfare, intermixed with fragments of the Jack of Spades card, which in my view are symbolic of every soldier, my monoprints celebrate and honor the contribution of each individual veteran to a larger whole.

Paul Jennis: King of Diamonds
His majesty the King of Diamonds sits on his fancy throne, a New York City Park bench. His subjects are the pigeons that flock to him for food to survive even though he has little food for himself. Although he is homeless he sits there with dignity wearing the crown of his uniform knowing that he has served his country well and protected the American way of life. Behind him is his memory as a US soldier with an embattled past that still haunts him and can be seen through the vail of a broken American fence….

Edel Rodriguez: King of Clubs
I have been working as an illustrator for 20 years. For 13 years, from 1994 to 2007, I was an art director at TIME magazine. During that time we covered 9/11, the Iraq War and the invasion of Afghanistan. We published numerous photo essays while our photographers were embedded with American troops. TI ME magazine also covered many of the issues that veterans dealt with upon their return. Many of the photographs I looked while I was an art director showed the effect of war on both soldiers and civilians. They made a big impact on me and has influenced my paintings and illustrations since then. The subject of war and its victims is an undercurrent of much of the work that I am currently making.

Steve Brodner: Joker (Red)
I have been working as a satirical artist, illustrator, caricaturist, journalist, teacher, lecturer for over 40 years. My work almost exclusively concerns itself with commentary in response to news of wars, conflicts, human disasters. The subject of how we treat our servicemen and women is a vitally important one. But how war is sold to young men and women and what they end up sacrificing as a result is, I feel, a very unfair deal. Only when it is too late, when the flags and bands and ribbons are swept away that they see the truth of it; what war truly is. And the price we all pay. As artists it is our job to tell the truth with clarity and conviction to the best of our ability.…

Dennis Dittrich: Joker (Black)
Ignoring all advice to the contrary, I began my freelance illustration career in 1982, leaving a job in a corporate art department. One of my first regular clients was Outdoor Life magazine, where I slavishly worked to make black and white spot drawings that I got 200.00 for and loved every minute of it. Though I also did an occasional advertising project, most of my work was magazine editorial. Trade magazines, among them The Institutional Investor and some Dow Jones publications, kept me alive for years with regular assignments. Other clients include Sports Illustrated, which gave me a measure of credibility with my family; Smithsonian, Field and Stream, The New York Times and Electra Records.

Soon, Jime began working in the same factory that her father did growing up.
